What a Difference a Year Makes - Tornadoes Celebrate First Anniversary

FOR RELEASE: January 23, 2006

Worcester, MA—On January 24th the Worcester Tornadoes celebrate their one year anniversary, and what a year it has been for the local Canadian-American Baseball League franchise.

With a vision of bringing professional baseball back to Worcester; which the city had been without for 71 years, the Tornadoes were given life. However, with just four months until the season opener, the Tornadoes were faced with the grueling challenge of building both an organization and a 3,000 seat stadium in a very limited amount of time; An accomplishment that was not only met, but also recognized through the prestigious Baseball America magazine.

Led by manager Rich Gedman, the young club took to the grounds of Hanover Insurance Park at Fitton Field with something to prove. Their gritty style of play and hard work quickly gained them the recognition of the team to beat.

Over 125,000 fans witnessed the Tornadoes as they fought through an intense season of 92 games, one of which games featured Toronto Blue Jays General Manager and Worcester native J.P. Ricciardi throwing out the first pitch.

After finishing with a record of 50 wins and 42 losses, the team found themselves in prime position to make a competitive run at the Arthur Ford championship trophy.

Knowing what was at stake the team buckled down with determination and played some of their best games of the season; which ultimately earned the young squad a chance to compete in the Can-Am Championship Series.

Looking to make the most of their opportunity the Tornadoes took an early series lead with an impressive 11 - 3 victory and never looked back, capturing the championship in an amazing three game sweep.

Making over 100 public appearances in the community, in addition to raising over $1,500 for Hurricane Katrina relief the Tornadoes proved to be champions away from the playing field as well.

As the 2006 season approaches the Tornadoes look forward to continuing to provide their fans with championship quality baseball, and defending their newly won crown. The memories of their incredible first season will continue to live on for many years to come.
