Full-Size Section of Blackstone Canal will be at Center of Worcester’s Blackstone Canalfest

Celebrating 2nd Annual Blackstone Canalfest and Canal’s Heritage and Future of Worcester

August 6, 2007

Worcester, MA., There are festivals and there are festivals.  But on Saturday, September 8, 2007 The BlackStone Canalfest in Worcester, MA will prove to be the most exciting place to be.

“This will be a  classic street festival complete with music, entertainment, vendors, food, kids’ activities, horse-and-wagon rides, historic as well as current canal project information, an all-day raffle and much more,” Roxann Horton, festival Chairperson explained. “But at the center of our festival will be an actual, re-created segment of the canal itself – complete with over 40,000 gallons of water. We will have an actual canal at Harding Street again!”

The 1st annual Blackstone Canalfest was hugely successful attracting over 70 vendors spotlighting food, crafts, children activities and more, as well as over 3,000 attendees enjoying a full day of entertainment and fun.  One of the highlights last year, which will also be replicated at this year’s festival, was the re-created canal.  The replication of the canal segment will be constructed on Harding Street, between Temple and Winter Streets, in the heart of Worcester’s Canal District. According to Horton, the Canal District Alliance, hosts of the Canalfest, and neighborhood businesses feel it is time to promote public awareness of the proposed canal replication project and to celebrate the re-awakening of one of Worcester’s most storied neighborhoods.

The Canal District Alliance responsible for hosting the Canalfest, and in collaboration with the John H. Chaffee Blackstone River Valley National Heritage want the public to know the history significance of the Blackstone Canal.  It transformed Worcester in the early 19th century and established a commercial water link to Providence and the sea. Modern improvements covered it over and it was forgotten a hundred years ago, but the waterway still flows beneath the streets of the city.  It is now the focus of an exciting proposal to build a watercourse along Harding Street to form the backbone of a dynamic mixed-use district in the heart of the city.   The Festival will serve as a fun and historic venue to help spotlight this important Worcester initiative.
