Rutland, MA – Heifer International invites the public to celebrate the fall harvest at the annual Harvest Festival at Overlook Farm in Rutland.
Visitors can embark on a self-guided tour through the Global Village, homes representing countries in which Heifer works such as Thailand and Guatemala. In the village, guests have an opportunity to enjoy traditional children’s harvest activities such as bobbing for apples and a hay maze. A highlight of the day is a horse-drawn hayride to the pumpkin patch where guests can pick their own pumpkins. Pumpkin fees vary according to their size. Guests can purchase a variety of local organic produce from the farmer’s market and browse the International Gift Shop that features Fair Trade and unique hand-crafted items from around the world. Throughout the day, they can learn about Heifer International as they meet many of Heifer’s animals including a pair of water buffalo, a yak, llamas and traditional farm animals.
Guests are invited to purchase organic produce and products from the food booth or bring a picnic lunch. Call 508-556-2221 or visit www.heifer.org/overlook for more information.
Overlook Farm is one of Heifer’s three U.S. learning centers, focusing on world hunger solutions, organic gardening and sustainable agricultural practices. At Overlook Farm, over 20,000 visitors a year become familiar with the root causes of poverty and hunger and Heifer’s work to help the poor achieve self-reliance. Since 1944, Heifer has provided livestock and ecologically sound agricultural training to millions of struggling families and is currently at work in more than 50 countries.
