Fitchburg Longsjo Classic registration on a roll
Fitchburg, MA (May 3, 2007) – With less than seven weeks to go, the Fitchburg Longsjo Classic is expecting nearly 900 riders. The grueling, four-day stage race dedicated to Art Longsjo, a Fitchburg native and 1956 dual Olympian, has grown into one of the largest pro/am cycling competitions in North America.
The 48th Annual Fitchburg Longsjo Classic begins with opening day festivities on June 27th and racing competition from June 28th through July 1st, in four exciting venues. The local community will host racers in eight different categories, including Women’s Pro/1/2 and Men’s Pro/1 and Men’s 2. Over $53,000 in cash prizes will be awarded. The deadline for registration is June 25, 2007.
Last year’s overall pro winners were Sarah Ulmer and Shawn Milne.
As the second oldest pro/am cycling race in North America, the Fitchburg Longsjo Classic honors the memory of Arthur Longsjo. Art was the first person to compete in both the summer and winter Olympics in the same year, 1956, and died tragically in 1958 after a string of 13 consecutive cycling victories. Art is a member of the Cycling Hall of Fame and Speed Skating Hall of Fame. The oldest U.S. cycling race still in existence is the Tour of Somerville, which Art Longsjo won in 1958.
