(Sturbridge, Mass.) - Children attending Old Sturbridge Village's Spring Discovery Camp April 12-13 can experience firsthand what life was like in early New England by doing just what kids did then - playing games, doing chores, having fun - all in authentic period clothing of the1830s. For camp sessions OSV's costume department provides girls with long dresses, bonnets and, if it's chilly, warm shawls or long capes. Boys wear straw hats, kerchiefs, cotton shirts and vintage work pants that are held up with suspenders.

"Wearing an authentic costume and taking on the roles of real 1830s residents really helps kids get "in character" quickly, and sets the stage for deeper historical learning about the era," says Kathy Kime, coordinator of the Discovery Camp program at Old Sturbridge Village. "It's one of the most popular aspects of our camping program - and quite a change for 21st century kids who are used to wearing jeans and sneakers."

Among the activities planned for the April Discovery Camp session are cooking over an open hearth, doing farm chores, and playing 19th century games. The April session is open to children 8-17, cost is $135 for non-member youths; $125 for Old Sturbridge Village member youths. Longer, five-day Discovery Camp sessions are offered each week during the summer from June 23 - August 15. For details: www.osv.org or call 1- 800-SEE-1830.
