Size and Influence

Worcester County is conveniently located in the center of Massachusetts and in the heart of New England.

  • Worcester, MA ranks 74th out of 316 top metro areas in the country.
  • The population of Worcester County is 790,000 people.
  • With a land area of 1,513 square miles, Worcester County is 43% larger than the state of Rhode Island, and the largest county in Massachusetts.
  • One million people live within a 25-mile radius and six million within a 50-mile radius.
  • Close to 2.5 million people visited Worcester County last year, most of who stayed at the 780 overnight rooms in the city of Worcester and the 4100 rooms countywide.
  • Worcester’s outstanding educational institutions attract approximately 36,000 college students to the 13 schools in the Colleges of Worcester Consortium. This helps boost the local economy and fuel the job market.

Air Service

Air charter service is also available at the Worcester Regional Airport, providing an economic alternative for group executive travel.

Rail Service

Freight Service: One of New England’s largest mainline freight interchanges is the Worcester area rail system. Worcester serves as an inland port for containerized freights. It handles containers of import cargoes from the Far East, which move by rail from West Coast ports to Worcester and are transferred to trucks for final delivery in New England.

Passenger Service: Amtrak Passenger Rail Service provides daily passenger rail service to and from Worcester.

Economic Environment

  • Biotechnology/high-tech, the health industry, manufacturing and Downtown development highlight Worcester area’s growth.
  • Total retail sales in the county were $6 billion and the City of Worcester alone is one of New England’s top leaders in retail sales.
